1st of May is May Day!

Dear Peace Information Network,

Happy New Month! I send these out to people around the world so think sending them the day before the special date gives us all a chance to do something special.

May Day is celebrated in several ways and these are outlined below. It actually started as a festival about spring back in very ancient times!

"May Day began as a Spring festival long ago. People gathered together on the first day of May to celebrate the coming of Summer. There are a lot of different customs that have been a part of May Day festivities. Some people would gather flowers and put them by their doors and windows to keep out troublesome fairies. Some people would put out their old hearth fires and gather with the people in their village to start a new fire to take home. Cutting down a tree and putting up a Maypole in the middle of a village is another popular custom. Ribbons are attached to the tree and are woven together by dancers. One more popular custom is filling May Baskets with flowers and other goodies to give to friends and loved ones. Some people still celebrate the pagan festival of Beltaine on the first of May. Many of the old customs are part of this celebration. http://www.cstone.net/~bry-back/holidayfun/mayday.html

May Day is also very well known around the world as International Workers' Day. The Wikipedia defines it this way:

"May Day is a name for various holidays celebrated on May 1 (or in the beginning of May). The most famous of these is International Workers' Day, which is the commemoration of the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. The 1 May date is used because in 1884 the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, inspired by Labor's 1872 success in Canada, demanded an eight-hour workday in the United States, to come in effect as of May 1, 1886. This resulted in the general strike and the U.S. Haymarket Riot of 1886, but eventually also in the official sanction of the eight-hour workday." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Day

More information about International Worker's Day can be found on the internet. Much of the information on the WWW comes from anarchist-leaning folks, as they feel that this day is fundamental to their cause. However, it is a day celebrated throughout the world. Here are some quotes and links you might wish to read.

"Since the late 19th century May Day has been associated with workers' rights and the international socialism movement. May 1st is designated as International Workers' Day (or Labour / Labor Day) and is a public holiday in many countries. In The US Labor Day falls at the beginning of September." http://www.wyrdology.com/festivals/may-day/workers.html

"May 1st, International Workers' Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, and is recognized in every country except the United States, Canada, and South Africa. This despite the fact that the holiday began in the 1880s in the United States, with the fight for an eight-hour work day." http://flag.blackened.net/daver/anarchism/mayday.html

"The original May Day demand was for a legal eight-hour day on an international basis. However as the years rolled on May Day came to assume the form of a wider demonstration of workers' power. It was here that arguably the most potent aspect of May Day arose, the festival becoming a one-day strike in many countries. For many others it was also a commemoration of the US 'Chicago Martyrs'--anarchists framed and executed by the state." http://pubs.socialistreviewindex.org.uk/sr263/flett.htm

In the USA Labor Day is celebrated in September and the 1st of May there is called Law Day. Every year a different focus is chosen.

"Each year on May 1st, Law Day provides an opportunity for everyone to reflect on our legal heritage, on the role of law, and on the rights and duties which are the foundation of peace and prosperity for all mankind." http://www.loc.gov/law/public/lawday.html

"When the United States of America was being created, the Founders were careful to ensure that no one branch of government have a concentration of power over the other branches of government. The Founders, who fought the American Revolution to rid themselves of a government where a few officials had all of the power, established a system of checks and balances between the branches to retain the integrity of the democracy.
The theme of the 2006 Law Day observances will show participants how the branches of government work together for the common good within their separate specialties and duties." http://www.nysba.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Attorney_Resources

Here is the newest May Day celebration! "May 1, GLOBAL LOVE DAY. The Love Foundation is once again inviting the people around the world to join together in celebrating and expanding LOVE during a one day planetary event encompassing all nations, all people, and all life. This is the third annual Global Love Day with the theme “Love Begins With Me” " http://www.thelovefoundation.com/
